Reading Lists: Guide for Academic Staff

Are you uploading a scanned chapter?

  • Have you included the title and title verso pages in your scan?
  • Have you completed all of the steps in the Copyright declaration processes?
    • Every step in the instructions below must be completed in order for the Library to process your request.
The Library does not digitise chapters upon request, if you are unable to scan a copy yourself, see the information at the bottom of this page. 

I would like to add a chapter from a book that I can't find through the Library (but I have a copy).

Ensure that these items comply with Copyright Considerations.

  1. From within the previously created Reading List click on Add Items+ 
  2. Select Blank Form.

  1. Select Book Chapter as the type of resource
  2. Complete the following item details fields:
    1. Chapter and book title
    2. Chapter and book author
    3. Publisher 
    4. Publication date
    5. Start and end page numbers
NOTE: Do not select the Personal Copy option. 

 

  1. Click on the click here to drag or upload a file link
  2. Find the file, then drag it into the File Upload box, or click to browse. 
NOTE: Your scanned copy MUST INCLUDE the title and title verso pages of the book for Copyright purposes. 

 

If it is not authored by you, it needs to be copyright-cleared by the Library.
  1. Make sure the Copyright Audit is Needed option is selected (this is the default). When in doubt, select this option.

 

  1. Add any Public Notes or any additional details about the resource. 
  2. Select which section you’d like to add the resource to.
  3. Click Add & Close.

 

Complete the Copyright process 
  1. Navigate to the item within your Reading List, and click on the title to open the details screen. 
  2. Scroll down to the Copyright section and click on the hyperlink to complete your Copyright Declaration form. 

  1. A pop up screen will appear, with some details already completed for your course. 
  2. Complete the chapter and page information and click Submit
NOTE: This step must be completed for the Library to process your request. 
  1. Your resource will be set to Being Prepared
NOTE: This means that the item requires Library mediation, and won't be visible to your students until this has been completed. 

 

  1. Once the Library has completed the Copyright clearance, this status will change to Complete
Add a tag so that both your students and the Library know the kind of reading this item will be.

 

 

  1. Where you have just added the resource, click Add tag.
  1. Select which tag you want to give the item by clicking on the appropriate one.

 

I would like to add a chapter from a book that I can't find through the Library (and I don't have a copy). 

If you are unable to provide your own copy of the chapter, the library will request a copy through our Document Delivery service (please allow up to a week for processing this request). 
Please complete the blank form by following the instructions above, and include a Note to/from Library with your request. 

 

  1. Once you have completed adding your citation, click on the item in your Reading List to enter the details screen.
  2. On the right side panel, click into the Notes to/from Library tab and enter in any relevant information for your request (e.g. I am unable to provide a copy of this chapter, please obtain a copy). 
  3. Click Submit Comment

 

I would like to add a book that I can't find through the Library.

  1. From within the previously created Reading List click on Add Items+ 
  2. Select Blank Form.

  1. Select the type of resource (book or eBook).  
NOTE: Selecting a type determines the fields available to you in the Item Details, so make sure to select the correct one. 

 

  1. Complete the item details fields (e.g. title, author, publisher, date, edition, etc.). 
  2. Click Add & Close.
  1. The item will appear in your Reading List with a Being Prepared status.
  2. When the library is processing the item you will see the status In Process or Purchase Requested. Once it is available, the status will change to Complete
NOTE: If Library staff have any queries or comments about this item, they will communicate via your Notre Dame email account. 
Add a tag so that both your students and the Library know the kind of reading this item will be.

 

  1. Where you have just added the resource, click Add tag.
  1. Select which tag you want to give the item by clicking on the appropriate one.

 

I would like to add a journal article that I can't find through the Library.

Ensure that these items comply with Copyright Considerations.

(If the below process is not possible for any reason, you can also follow the instructions for requesting a Book Chapter). 

First you will need to add the Cite It! bookmark if you haven't already. Follow the instructions under the Adding Cite It! tab. Then continue to follow the instructions below. 

 

  1. Find the webpage for the journal article that you would like to add. Even if it is just an abstract of the article, the details of the article will be brought into your list and provided to the Library.  
  2. Click on the Cite It! bookmark on your browser.

  1. A pop up box will appear, that will auto-fill some information from that page.
NOTE: The Library recommends that you complete any missing information if possible, as this will be beneficial to your students when they refer to that webpage. 

 

 

  1. At the bottom of the box, use the dropdown menu to select the Reading List you would like to add this resource to. You can start typing a course code to find the correct list. 
  2. Once you have selected the list, you can also select the section you would like to move it to. 
  3. Click Add & Close.
  1. Your resource will immediately appear in your Reading List and will be set to Being Prepared. 
NOTE: This means that the item requires Library mediation, and won't be visible to your students until this has been completed. 

 

  1. Once the Library has completed processing the item, this status will change to Complete
Add a tag so that both your students and the Library know the kind of reading this item will be.

 

  1. Where you have just added the resource, click Add tag.
  1. Select which tag you want to give the item by clicking on the appropriate one.

 

I would like to add a handout/worksheet/outline which is unpublished and authored by me. 

  1. From within the previously created Reading List click on Add Items+ 
  2. Select Blank Form.
  1. Select document as the type of resource.  
  2. Complete the item details fields with as much detail as possible. 
NOTE: Do not select the Personal Copy option. 

  1. Click on the click here to drag or upload a file link
  2. Find the file, then drag it into the File Upload box, or click to browse. 

 

  1. Select Authored by me and not commercially published – does not require copyright clearance
NOTE: If the document wasn't authored by you or you're not sure, select Copyright audit is needed.

 

  1. Click Add & Close.
  1. As the document does not require Copyright audit, it will be immediately available for students to view when you publish your list. 
Add a tag so that both your students and the Library know the kind of reading this item will be.

 

  1. Where you have just added the resource, click Add tag.
  1. Select which tag you want to give the item by clicking on the appropriate one.
