Why are we asked to work in groups?

Working in groups and teams can be challenging, yet it is a common practice at university. Here are some of the reasons why you might be asked to do group assignments:

To encourage you to work collaboratively with your peers
To encourage you to share ideas and be mindful and respectful of other’s ideas
To learn how to brainstorm and discuss ideas
To promote critical thinking and build negotiation skills
To provide you the opportunity to learn from each other
To encourage you to meet others in your program

Writing a group charter (University of British Columbia)
Before you start work, it can be helpful to establish ground rules, designate roles, and choose tools. This can all be done in a document called a group charter. Read more about how to create one.
Meeting strategies for group work (University of Waterloo)
Group work will probably involve several meetings. Learn how to organise them to for maximum efficiency and clarity.

There are lots of great tools out there to help with communication and organisation. Choose your tools early on in the process, and make sure that everyone has access to them. At the very least, exchange contact information so you have basic ways of staying in touch.

Trello
Project management tool which uses lists, boards and cards to help you assign and keep track of tasks.
Google Drive
Cloud-based document creation and storage system. Google Drive is good for group writing projects and storing documents for everyone to access.
