Basic Search Tips

Tips to get you started on a database search

  • Review the assignment question and identify key concepts e.g. 'physiotherapy' and 'aged'
  • Brainstorm alternative terms for each concept e.g. 'physical therapy', 'elderly'
  • Use brackets to group like terms together e.g. ("physical therapy" OR physiotherapy")
  • Use OR to retrieve articles that include either/any of your terms e.g. (aged OR elderly)
  • Use AND to retrieve articles that include both/all of your terms e.g. "physical therapy" AND aged
  • Use double quotation marks to search for an exact phrase. e.g. "physical therapy"
