Find out what's new in EndNote 21:

Overview

EndNote is citation management software that is commonly used at universities and research institutions.  All students and staff at The University of Notre Dame Australia are entitled to download and use EndNote for free. EndNote 21 is installed on all on-campus PCs.

EndNote can help you manage and use references to support your research and writing.

  • Create, manage and organise a database (or library) of your references
  • Create in-text citations or footnotes in Microsoft Word or Mac Pages, and automatically build your bibliography as you put the citations into your document
  • Choose from a wide range of Reference styles
  • Add, highlight, annotate and search PDF files
  • Configure flexible groups and subgroups of references for different assignments or projects

While anyone can use EndNote for their research and coursework, EndNote is particularly suited for postgraduate students and researchers. Here are some of the ways it can be used to streamline your work:

  • EndNote collates large collections of documents and references for easy access, and has features for annotating documents and records.
  • Folders, known as Groups can assist in categorising your research. Some like to create groups for structural elements, e.g. "Introduction" or "Literature Review" whereas others might group by subject, e.g. "Socioeconomic factors" or "Asthma in children with autism".
  • Export entire sets of search results to your Library to be analysed and deduplicated, which is an essential part of the systematic review process.
  • The extensive bank of referencing styles correspond to the requirements of specific publishers, associations, and disciplines.
  • Share your EndNote Library with your colleagues or project team using EndNote Web, the cloud-based component of EndNote.
  • Save time during the writing process by inserting in-text references or footnotes as you write - EndNote will populate the reference list for you.

1. Please see the Software section of this guide to download EndNote to your PC or Mac. If you are working on a University PC, locate the EndNote program from the Start menu.

2. Once you have installed the EndNote software, you'll be prompted to create a new EndNote Library (alternatively, go to File > New... in EndNote)

Tip: Give the Library a meaningful name (e.g. "Mental Health research project" and be sure to remember where you save it.

3. Import references to your library from your searches on FiNDit and other library databases (e.g. EBSCO, PubMed)

4. Use the Find Full Text function to add the PDFs to your references within your EndNote Library

5. Organise your references within your EndNote Library using the Create Groups function

6. Create formatted bibliographies for your assignments using EndNote. Or, using Cite While You Write, insert references into your assignments as you write them, and then let the software create and format your bibliography for you.
