AMA Referencing (Vancouver)

Configuring AMA (Vancouver) & Endnote

EndNote is a bibliographic management system that helps you to:

  • Create, manage and organise a database (or library) of your references
  • Create in-text citations or footnotes in Microsoft Word or Mac Pages, and automatically build your bibliography as you put the citations into your document
  • Choose from a wide range of Reference styles
  • Add, highlight, annotate and search PDF files
  • Configure flexible groups and subgroups of references for different assignments or projects

EndNote is provided free to all staff and students of the University of Notre Dame Australia. For information on installing and using EndNote, please see our EndNote guide below. For information on using AMA 11th style and EndNote, please see the tabs on this page.

To download AMA 11th style to your EndNote Library:

  1. Go to the webpage above for AMA 11th Style. Download and save the style to your computer.
  2. Double click on the downloaded style to open it within EndNote.
  3. EndNote should automatically open in the style template window. Click File menu and choose Save As.
  4. Name the style as you wish. If the word “Copy” appears at the end, you may wish to remove it. You can then click Save.
  5. Close the style by clicking the File menu and then Close Style.
  6. The style will now be available to select for formatting with EndNote.

To choose your Output Style in EndNote:

  1. In the EndNote toolbar at the top of the window, see the Bibliographic Output Style selection pane.
  2. The style that is presently selected can be changed by clicking the dropdown arrow.
  3. If the list does not include your preferred style, click Select Another Style to browse the EndNote Choose A Style list. Should an individual output style you wish to use not appear in EndNote's default selection of styles, you may want to check whether it is available for download from EndNote's Style Finder or other source. See the Installing Individual Styles page for more information.

One of the features of AMA style are the special abbreviations of the journal names. These abbreviations come from a specific list created by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) in the US. This "terms list" must be configured separately in EndNote to ensure that journal names are abbreviated properly in your references. Follow the links below to set up the terms list for your version of EndNote.
